DUSHANBE, April 26, 2013, Asia-Plus  — The Environmental Protection Commission of the Majlisi Namoyandagon (Tajikistan’s lower chamber of parliament) met on April 25 to discuss the process of implementation of agreements and projects for recycling of uranium-containing waste in Tajikistan, Muhammadato Sultonov, a spokesman for the Majlisi Namoyandagon, told Asia-Plus today.

Speaking on this subject, the Environmental Protection Commission head Mahmadsharif Haqdodov noted that the problem of recycling of uranium-containing waste was not only Tajikistan’s national problem because it might cause a region-wide anthropogenic disaster.

According to him, Tajikistan does not have enough financial, technical and personnel resources to solve this problem alone.

The meeting participants came to a conclusion that joint efforts of the countries of the region as well as relevant international organizations are needed to solve existing problems of recycling of uranium-containing waste in Tajikistan, Sultonov said.

The meeting participants reportedly included members of the Environmental Protection Commission as well as representatives of relevant governmental bodies and the Academy of Sciences of Tajikistan.
