DUSHANBE, October 8, 2013, Asia-Plus — Liquefied gas imports into Tajikistan have increased over the first eight months of this year, according the Ministry of energy and Industry (MoEI).
An official source at a MoEI says the increase has resulted from liquefied gas imports from Russia.
According to the statistical data from the MoEI, Tajikistan has imported 153,900 tons of liquefied gas over the first eight months of this year, which is 96,000 tons more than in the same period last year
“Tajikistan has been importing liquefied gas from the Russian Federation since last July,” said the source. “In July-August, Tajikistan imported 14,700 tons of liquefied gas from the Russian Federation.”
Meanwhile, gasoline imports have considerable dropped in Tajikistan. Over the first eight months of this year, Tajikistan has reportedly imported 85,700 tons of gasoline, which is 24,200 tons fewer than in the same period last year.
The percentage of the country’s transportation using liquefied gas has increased from 40 percent in 2012 to more than 50 percent due to high gasoline prices, the source added.
Tajikistan reportedly imports liquefied gas by road tankers and rail cars and Kazakhstan now provides the bulk of Tajikistan’s liquefied gas imports.
Piped natural gas is no longer being imported to Tajikistan from Uzbekistan as the supply contract, which expired at the end of 2012, has not been renewed.
