DUSHANBE, November 18, 2013, Asia-Plus – Tajikistan reportedly has the lowest average wage among the CIS nations.

Vedomosti’s information department notes that over the first six months of this year the lowest average wage in the CIS area has been registered in Tajikistan – 4,864.73 Russian rubles (RR), which is more than six times lower than in the Russian Federation (there is no information about Uzbekistan for this period).

The highest average wage growth over the report period has been registered in Belarus – 38.5 percent.  In Russia, average wage has risen 13.3 percent over the same six-month period.

Russia, Kazakhstan and Belarus remain leaders among the CIS nations in terms of average wage rates.  As of July 1, 2013, average wage reportedly amounted to 30,228.70 RR in the Russian Federation, 23,837 RR in Kazakhstan and 20,119.90 RR in Belarus.

Commenting on the report released by Vedomosti, Igor Polyakov, an expert at Russia’s Center for Macroeconomic Analysis and Short-Term Forecasting, notes that these results are logical.

In Belarus, the wage growth is conditioned by high inflation while in Russia and Kazakhstan, the wage growth is conditioned by the current situation of their economies and the CIS labor market, Polyakov said.

As far as Tajikistan is concerned, the low average wage in this country has resulted from extremely low level of development of industry and mining operations, the expert said.  Besides, Tajikistan is among the top three countries in terms of the number of labor migrants working in Russia, he added.

Vedomosti (The Record) is a Russian language business daily.  It is a joint venture between Dow Jones, the

Financial Times

and Sanoma, publishers of

The Moscow Times

.  Vedomosti is a project called into being by Financial Times and The Wall Street Journal, the world’s leading business newspapers.  Together with the largest Russian publishing house Independent Media, they have been publishing Vedomosti since 1999.

Meanwhile, according to the Agency for Statistics under the President of Tajikistan, an average monthly wage of hired employees in Tajikistan in September 2013 amounted to 718.70 somoni, 12.8 percent higher than in August 2013 and 20.1 percent higher than in September last year.  The minimum monthly wage in Tajikistan now amounts to 250.00 somoni.
