DUSHANBE, August 22, 2008, Asia-Plus  — Water levels at the reservoir powering the Norak hydroelectric power station (HPS) have reached the level of 894 meters to this date, Nozir Yodgori, a spokesman for Barqi Tojik (Tajik electric systems) power holding, told Asia-Plus Thursday (August 21) afternoon.

According to him, the rate of inflow of water into the reservoir is currently 820-830 cubic meters per second.

It means that compared to early August the water inflow rate has halved.  We will recall that the Barqi Tojik spokesman reported on August 5 that on August 3-4, the rate of inflow of water into the Norak reservoir was 1,760 cubic meters per second, and over the mentioned two days, water levels at the reservoir increased by more than 1 meter.

The high water inflow rate in early August resulted from hot weather.  In early August, the temperature in the country was 45°C and even higher that caused mountain snow to melt, the spokesman said.

“Until the end of last week, water levels at the Norak reservoirs were increasing 50 cm per day, while at present, water levels at the reservoir are increasing 13 cm per day,” Yodgori noted.

According to Barqi Tojik, last year, water levels at the Norak reservoir had reached the target technical point of 910 meter above sea level by September 17.

“Meteorologists expect the temperature in the country to increase up to 40°C-43°C in late August and early September and we hope the reservoir will reach the target technical point before the end of September,” the spokesman said, noting that electricity rationing has not yet been introduced in the country.
