Against the backdrop of bombings of Iran, Tajik-Iranian bilateral trade decreased by almost 10%

The reduction in exports amidst the growth in imports has exacerbated the trade imbalance between Tajikistan and Iran.

The bilateral trade between Tajikistan and Iran in March of this year decreased by 9.8% compared to the previous month, amid extensive bombardments of the Islamic Republic by the U.S. and Israel.

According to the Agency for Statistics under the President of Tajikistan, a two-way trade between the two countries in March valued at $40.6 million, which is $4.4 million less than the figure for February.

The decline was mainly due to a sharp reduction in the export of Tajik products to Iran. Its volume fell almost threefold — from $10.6 million in February to $3.9 million in March.

At the same time, the import of Iranian goods to Tajikistan, on the contrary, increased by 7.9% — from $34 million to $36.7 million.

By the end of the first quarter, Iran’s share in Tajikistan’s foreign trade turnover was about 4.5%.

Overall, over the past five years, the bilateral trade between Tajikistan and Iran has shown steady growth. By the end of last year, the Tajik-Iranian trade reportedly increased by 28.1% — from $377.7 million in 2024 to approximately $484 million.

Tajikistan’s export to Iran amounted to about $113 million, while the import of Iranian goods exceeded $371 million. Iran’s share in Tajikistan’s foreign trade turnover reached 4.5%.

The basis of Tajik exports to Iran consists of raw materials, including cotton fiber, cotton yarn, as well as certain types of ores and metals.

From Iran to Tajikistan, petrochemical products, construction materials, food products (including vegetables and fruits), as well as polymers, including various types of polyethylene, are predominantly imported.

Overall, Tajikistan’s foreign trade turnover over the first quarter of this year has amounted to about $2.7 billion, which is 12.8% more than in January – March 2025.

In January-March this year, Tajikistan reportedly had foreign trade relations with 112 countries worldwide.

The trade balance was negative and amounted to over $1.6 billion.

The export of goods amounted to almost $514 million, which is 0.7% less than in January–March 2025.

The major partners in the export of goods were: China – 39.9% (of the total volume of Tajikistan’s exports); Turkiye – 11.6%; Belgium – 12.7%; Uzbekistan – 8.5%; and Kazakhstan – 5.8%.

The import of goods into Tajikistan over the same three-month period has amounted to about $2.2 billion, which is 16.6% more compared to the first quarter of the previous year.
