DUSHANBE, February 18, 2014, Asia-Plus – The USD exchange rate has reportedly fallen by the end of last week due to additional measures taken by the National Bank of Tajikistan (NBT).
According to the NBT press center, the USD market exchange rate in Dushanbe dropped to 4.94 somoni to US$1.00 on February 15.
“The rate has fallen due to additional measures taken by the NBT, lenders and currency-exchange points,” a source at Tajik central bank said.
We will recall that Tajikistan saw sharp currency devaluation this month and the Tajik national currency, the somoni, fell three percent against the dollar. On February 14, the exchange rate of the somoni against the dollar at some currency-exchange points was 5:1. The current market rate is 4.94 somoni to US$1.00.
According to Radio Liberty’s Tajik Service, Tajikistan”s National Bank said on February 14 that the situation had nothing to do with the 19 percent devaluation of Kazakhstan”s national currency, the tenge, announced last week.
