DUSHANBE, August 8, 2008, Asia-Plus – On Friday August 8, Director of the Drug Control Agency (DCA), Lieutenant-General Rustam Nazarov, met with representatives of the German Agency for Technical Cooperation (GTZ) CO in Tajikistan, Ms. Patricia Kramars, health policy consultant, and Ms. Susanne Schardt, drug policy consultant, according to the DCA press service.
The sides exchanged views on joint cooperation in the “Youth, HIV/AIDS, Drug Addiction” sector, and the GTZ representatives noted that within the framework of this project, the Government of Germany had provided 2 million euros to Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan under the special program, the press service said.
In the course of the talks, the Tajik drug control chief briefed the GTZ representatives on the present drug situation in Tajikistan, activities of the Tajik counternarcotics agency, main tendencies of drug addiction in the countries and measures taken by the Tajik government to solve this program.
GTZ has been working on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) in Tajikistan since 1995. Cooperation has centered on rebuilding the economy and promoting the drawn-out, frequently interrupted transition process from a centrally planned economy to a competitive social market system. In the meantime, the focus of Technical Cooperation has shifted to a reform of the basic education system and support for economic reforms.
In cooperation with the international donor community, GTZ contributes towards Tajikistan’s economic development through the following projects: promotion of basic education; support for micro-finance services in rural regions; support for legal and judicial reform; and food security program.
