DUSHANBE, May 4, 2014, Asia-Plus – Tajik President Emomali Rahmon has extended condolences to the people of Afghanistan over a deadly landslide that hit one of villages in Badakhshan province.

In a cable of condolences sent to Afghan President Hamid Karzai on May 3, Emomali Rahmon asked to convey his deep condolences to all those who lost their loved ones in the massive landslide that hit the village of Aab Bareek on Friday May 2.

Tajik leader also expressed the Tajik government’s readiness to send aid to the fraternal country.

The French news agency reports that survivors of a landslide that entombed a village in northern Afghanistan mourned hundreds of dead relatives on Sunday as aid teams rushed to care for 700 families left homeless in the mountains.

Much of Aab Bareek village in Badakhshan province was reportedly swallowed on Friday by a fast-moving tide of mud and rock that sweep down the hillside and left almost no trace of 300 homes.

Government officials have put the current death toll at 300 people and warned it could rise by hundreds more, after initial reports suggested that as many as 2,500 people may have died, AFP reports.

BBC reports that much of north and east Afghanistan has been hit by heavy rain in recent days, and some 150 people have died in flooding.
