DUSHANBE, August 5, 2014, Asia-Plus — The ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) plans to carry out the PDP Central Executive Committee plenum in late August to set a date for its election.

“The plenum will also determine the procedure of election of delegates for the congress,” Usmon Soliyev, the head of the PDP public relations department, said, noting the party’s primary organizations are holding meetings to elect delegates for the party’s district, city and regional conferences.

The conferences will elect delegates for the election congress, Soliyev added.

Founded in 1994, the People’s Democratic Party is the largest political party in Tajikistan, boasting some 250,000 registered members.  President Emomali Rahmon is chairman of the party. The PDP now controls more than 60 percent of the seats in parliament.
