Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kyrgyzstan, issued a statement about Monday’s incident on the Tajik-Kyrgyz border.
As reported in the Kyrgyz Foreign Ministry’s press release, on 25 August at approximately 18:30, an armed incident took place in the Kyrgyz area of Say Kulundin of Leylek district in Batken province between Kyrgyz and Tajik military personnel.
The press release says: “While trying to curb the illegal conduct of Tajik citizens and to stop them from dismantling the bridge, Tajik military personnel opened fire on Kyrgyz military personnel from small arms, which led to the shoot-out between Kyrgyz and Tajik military. Furthermore, during the half an hour shoot-out, Kulundu border outpost was subjected to mortar fire from the Tajik territory.”
In this regard, as reported in the press-release, “a protest note is prepared by the Kyrgyz Foreign Ministry and handed to Tajikistan, where the Kyrgyz side, expressing deep concern over the incident, called on the Tajik side to strict observance of international law norms and principles, and proposed to immediately hold a joint investigation and bring to justice all the perpetrators, as well as clarify military action of Tajikistan, which runs contrary to all the reached agreements between the two countries.”
