DUSHANBE, September 29, 2014, Asia-Plus – The Russian Federation has confirmed a contribution of US$5 million to the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) in Tajikistan.

According to press release issued by WFP Tajikistan, the donation will fund WFP’s activities across all 66 districts of Tajikistan, in support of communities’ efforts to find sustainable answers to food insecurity.

“This donation will enable rural communities to build assets that will enhance agricultural production and productivity, support health centers to combat child malnutrition, provide tuberculosis patients (and their families) with critical support for the duration of their treatment, supply 350,000 primary school children with a daily hot lunch and help them develop productive school gardens and orchards” says Nicolas Oberlin, WFP Country Director for Tajikistan.

The Russian Federation is WFP’s largest donor in Tajikistan, with total contributions over the last decade of US$ 60 million, and a strong commitment to the Government of Tajikistan’s school meals program implemented with WFP’s support since 1999.

WFP is the world”s largest humanitarian agency fighting hunger worldwide, delivering food in emergencies and working with communities to build resilience. In 2013, WFP assisted more than 80 million people in 75 countries.
