DUSHANBE, October 20, 2014, Asia-Plus — Senior representatives of political parties, officially registered in Tajikistan, will gather in Khujand, the capital of Sughd province to discuss their participation in the upcoming parliamentary elections due in February of the next year, according to the Central Commission for Elections and Referenda of Tajikistan (CCER).

Organized by the Public Council of Tajikistan and the OSCE office in Tajikistan, a roundtable that will take place on October 22 is expected to bring together representatives of political parties, political scientists, experts and representatives of the CCER to discuss issues related to participation of political parties in the upcoming parliamentary elections and amendments made to the country’s election legislation, an official source at the CCER told Asia-Plus in an interview.

We will recall that all the eight political parties, officially registered in Tajikistan, will hold their pre-election congresses in December to determine their candidates to run in the upcoming parliamentary elections.

The 2015 parliamentary elections are expected to take place in Tajikistan in late February.  Tajikistan’s Parliament (Majlisi Oli) has two chambers: the Assembly of Representatives (Majlisi Namoyandagon) and the National Assembly (Majlisi Milli).  Majlisi Namoyandagon has 63 members, elected for a five-year term in, 22 by proportional representation and 41 in single-seat constituencies.  Majlisi Milli has 33 members, 25 elected for a five-year term by local legislature (majlis) members and eight appointed by the president.
