DUSHANBE, September 29, 2014, Asia-Plus – Press release issued by the U.S. Embassy in Dushanbe notes that U.S. Ambassador to Tajikistan Susan Elliott and First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Ozoda Emomali on September 27 signed Amendment #15 to the Letter of Agreement on Narcotics Control and Law Enforcement between the Governments of the United States and the Republic of Tajikistan, which will provide $3,246,667 million in assistance to Tajikistan to continue support for programs related to border security, law enforcement, counter narcotics, trafficking-in-persons, and justice sector development in Tajikistan.

This U.S. Government assistance will develop the capacities of Tajikistan”s law enforcement and security agencies in the fight against illegal drug flows and will support Tajikistan’s police reform efforts through community policing and training for law enforcement.  The assistance will also continue to strengthen rule of law initiatives in Tajikistan with assistance for law school reform and ongoing training for the criminal defense community to develop Tajikistan’s judicial system.

The U.S. Government is committed to continued collaboration with the Government of Tajikistan to ensure safety and security for all citizens.  Since 1992, the American people have provided over $1 billion in programs and humanitarian aid that support Tajikistan’s democratic institutions, health care, education, and economic growth.
