DUSHANBE, November 3, 2014, Asia-Plus — On Saturday November 1, Japan’s Ambassador to Tajikistan Takashi Kamada met here Asror Latifzoda, the deputy head of the Tajik ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

“During the meeting, the sides discussed issues related to economic and humanitarian cooperation between Tajikistan and Japan as well as PDP’s preparations for the parliamentary elections due in late February next year,” Usmon Soliyev, the head of the PDP public relations department, told Asia-Plus in an interview.

According to him, Latifzoda briefed Ambassador Kamada on history of the People’s Democratic Party, its structure and its role in the modern political life of Tajikistan.

“Mr. Kamada, for his part, informed Latifzoda about plans of his country in strengthening democratic foundations in Tajikistan, expanding political and economic cooperation with Tajikistan as well as Japan-supported projects being implemented in Tajikistan and training of Tajik young specialists in Japan,” Soliyev said.

Founded in 1994, the People’s Democratic Party is the largest political party in Tajikistan, boasting some 250,000 registered members.  President Emomali Rahmon is chairman of the party.  The PDP controls more than 60 percent of the seats in the current parliament.
