DUSHANBE, July 2, 2008, Asia-Plus — Representatives of the interregional public association Pamir based in St. Petersburg have expressed serious concern about the situation in the Gorno Badakhshan Autonomous Region (Gorno Badakhshan or GBAO).
An open letter released by the organization, in particular, called on all side to be patient and use civilized methods to tackle arising problems.
The letter stressed that local authorities and law enforcement agencies are responsible for an opportune revelation and solution of socioeconomic problems and fight against crime.
Noting that local informal leaders are also responsible for inconsistency of their actions and unscrupulousness, the coordination council of the public association Pamir reminded that the country had already gone through one senseless civil war.
Mass unemployment, miserable wage, high prices, social vulnerability and uncertainty force people to leave for other countries seeking better employment opportunities. Dozens of thousands of people are currently working outside the country in the hope that it will be peace and stability in their homeland.
Therefore, the authorities should perform their duties, providing observance of constitutional rights of citizens to have labor and deserved remuneration of labor as well as and maintaining public order, the letter said.
The public association called on the GBAO authorities and population to work jointly to tackle any arising problems.
Especially noting the necessity of worthily meeting the Aga Khan IV on the occasion of his Gold Jubilee, the association reminded that it was the Aga Khan that had saved the region in the most difficult time through providing disinterested assistance.
Only strict observance of rights and freedoms of citizens declared by the Constitution of the Republic of Tajikistan is guarantee of peace, stability and prosperity of our country, the letter said.
