DUSHANBE, January 19, 2015, Asia-Plus — The Majlisi Namoyandagon (Tajikistan’s lower chamber of parliament) Deputy Speaker Mirgand Shabozov is set to leave for Istanbul, Turkey tomorrow to lead a Tajik parliamentary delegation partaking in the 10th session of the Parliamentary Union of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Member States due between January 21-22, Muhammadato Sultonov, a spokesman for the Majlisi Namoyandagon, told Asia-Plus in an interview.

According to him, the delegation members include deputies of the Majlisi Namoyandagon Ziyoratsho Sadullo and Barakatullo Atokhoja.

“Mr. Shabozov is expected to deliver a statement at the session, Sultonov said.

We will recall that the 9th session of the Parliamentary Union of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation Member States was hosted by Iran in 2014.

The Parliamentary Union of the OIC Member States (PUIC is composed of the parliaments of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) members states.  It was established in Iran on June 17, 1999, with its head office situated in Tehran.

Established on the initiative of the Islamic Parliament of Iran, the PUIC reportedly seeks to strengthen parliamentary cooperation among Islamic countries in order to find solution for the challenges facing the Islamic world through parliamentary approaches.

The first Secretary General was Egyptian diplomat, Mr. Ibrahim Ahmed Auf, who served for two terms from March 1, 2000 to April 30, 2008.  On May 1, 2008, Dr. Mahmoud Erol Kilic from Turkey was appointed as the second Secretary General.

The PUIC has six standing committees: Standing Committee on Information and Cultural Affairs (COMIAC); Standing Committee on Economic and Commercial Cooperation (COMCEC); Standing Committee on Scientific and Technological Cooperation (COMSTECH); Islamic Committee for Economic, Cultural and Social Affairs; Permanent Finance Committee; and Financial Control Organ.
