DUSHANBE, February 4, 2015, Asia-Plus — Remittance flows to Gorno Badakhshan last year declined by nearly 18 percent compared with 2013, according to the National Bank of Tajikistan (NBT)’s office in Khorog, the capital of the Gorno Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO).
An official source at the NBT’s office in Khorog says approximately 50 million U.S dollars were remitted to banks in region last year, which is 9 million U.S. dollars fewer than in 2013.
According to him, a half of that amount was remitted to Agroinvestbonk’s main branch in Khorog.
Senior representatives of Agroinvestbonk’s main branch in Khorog say nearly 25 million U.S. dollars were remitted to Agroinvestbonk’s main branch in Khorog last year, which is 4 million U.S. dollars fewer than in 2013.
Meanwhile, banks in other regions of the country have stopped publishing information on the volume of remittances sent to Tajikistan.
We will recall that Tajik government stopped publishing information on the volume of remittances sent to Tajikistan in May 2013. The NBT head Shirinov told journalists on July 23, 2013 that Tajikistan will no longer release cash transfer data. “I”d rather not talk about migrants” funds because this issue may be politicized,” Tajik central bank head said.
