DUSHANBE, February 10, 2015, Asia-Plus — Tajik President Emomali Rahmon yesterday afternoon received a group of resident representatives of the United Nations agencies active in Tajikistan, led by the UN Resident Coordinator/UNDP Resident Representative in Tajikistan Alexander Zuev.

According to the Tajik president’s official website, state and prospects of further expansion of cooperation between Tajikistan and the United Nations in sectors like health care, education, migration, crime prevention and child protection were a major topic of the meeting.

A special attention was given to development and implementation of new UN-supported projects and programs in Tajikistan, including United Nations Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF) for Tajikistan 2016-2020.

23 specialized agencies of the United Nations active in Tajikistan reportedly implemented approximately 100 projects to a total amount of 346 million U.S. dollars in the country from 20110 to 2014.

The UN has been present in Tajikistan since 1992, commencing with the UN Tajikistan Office for Peace-building (UNTOP), which ended its mission in October 2007.  Since 1993, the UN has increased its presence to 23 specialized agencies, funds and programs of the UN and World Bank.  The International Monetary Fund (IMF) and International Finance Corporation are also active in Tajikistan and working closely with the UN Country Team (UNCT).  The aim of the UN in Tajikistan is to assist the Government in implementing the Country Development reforms and provide support in the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals.

The UNCT cooperation and coordination is also comprehensive in the areas of HIV/AIDS prevention, youth and gender issues, food security and nutrition, disaster management and topics like health, WASH and education. The coordination of the UNCT is facilitated through the Office of the UN Resident Coordinator (RCO), whose main function is to support the UNCT through the coordination and analytical assistance as well as joint UNCT programming opportunities.
