DUSHANBE, June 12, Asia-Plus  — Agriculture Minister Qosim Qosimov recently issued an order putting ban on grain exports.

The source at the Ministry of Agriculture (MoA) said that the order is dedicated to ensure timely harvest and determine the country’s grain stocks for this year.

The ministry has applied to the customs service and main border directorate within the state committee for national security for assistance in preventing grain exports.

According to specialists, Tajikistan’s annual requirements in wheat are 1.2 million tons, while wheat produced in the country may meet not more than 50 percent of the country’s requirements.

This year, Tajik farmers have planted wheat on an area of 275,940 hectares, the MoA source said.

According to the state grain company, Ghalla, 45,915 tons of wheat and 119,037 tons of whet flour have been imported into Tajikistan over the first three months of this year.  In all, Tajikistan intends to import 700,000 tons of wheat and flour this year.

We will recall that last year, Tajikistan imported 282,733 tons of wheat and 511,587 tons of flour.

Russia and Kazakhstan provide the bulk of Tajikistan’s grain imports.  Kazakhstan is the largest supplier of grains to the country, accounting for some 98 percent of Tajikistan’s grain imports.
