According to the Ministry of Energy ad Industries (MoEI), the meeting is discussing the results of work of the CIS power systems during autumn-winter 2007-2008.

The meeting is also expected to consider issues related to conducting feasibility study for synchronization of the CIS power systems and the unified power system of the Baltic states with the association of transmission systems operators in continental Europe (Union for the Coordination of Transmission of Electricity or ECTE).

The meeting will also sum up the results of work of the regional groups and the coordination council on implementation of the strategy of interaction and cooperation among the CIS member nations in the field of energy.

Besides, the meeting is also planned to consider issues related to international and interstate activity of the CIS electric energy council aimed at further expansion of strategic partnership and cooperation among the CIS states in the energy sector, the source at a MoEI said.

One of major topics of the meeting is election of the council president.  We will recall that the council has been presided over by the head of the Russian joint-stock company Unified Energy Systems of Russia (RAO YeES) Anatoly Chubais since 2008.

According to Russia’s news agency RIA Novosti, Russia will continue to preside over the council but Chubais will be replaced by the newly appointed Energy Minister Sergey Shamtko.
