Russian president visits Iran to attend GECF summit

DUSHANBE, November 23, 2014, Asia-Plus — Russian President Vladimir Putin, heading a high-ranking delegation, arrived in Tehran Monday morning to participate in a Gas Exporting Countries Forum summit.

While in Tehran, Russian president is expected to meet with Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, and President of the Islamic republic of Iran Hassan Rouhani,

According to reports, Putin will finalize execution of a 40 billion dollars economic agreement during his visit to Tehran.

The reports have called fighting terrorism, in particular fighting Daesh (Arabic acronym for Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), as one of the major topics of Putin meetings with Iranian officials.

Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin told reporters Monday morning that a Russian delegation will visit Iran in December to prepare the ground for increase of economic cooperation between Tehran and Moscow.

reported that Putin and Ayatollah Khamenei will discuss such issues as the settlement of the conflict in Syria, the implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action on Iran”s nuclear program and the global fight against terrorism, with the terrorist group of Daesh in particular.

The priority on the agenda of the meeting will be the issue of increasing bilateral trade and economic cooperation.

The Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) is an intergovernmental organization of 11 of the world”s leading natural gas producers made up of Algeria, Bolivia, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Iran, Libya, Nigeria, Qatar, Russia, Trinidad and Tobago and Venezuela.  GECF members together control over 70% of the world”s natural gas reserves, 38% of the pipeline trade and 85% of the liquefied natural gas (LNG) production.  The three largest reserve-holders in the GECF – Russia, Iran and Qatar – together hold about 57% of global gas reserves.
