DUSHANBE, December 16, 2015 Asia-Plus – Tajikistan has called on member nations of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) to expand regional cooperation.

Addressing the Twenty-Sixty Meeting of the ECO Regional Planning Council (RPC) in Tehran, Tajik Ambassador to Iran Nematullo Emomazoda on December 15 pointed to the necessity of expansion of agrarian, transportation and investment cooperation between the ECO member nations, according to the Iranian Embassy in Dushanbe.

Representatives of all 10 member nations of the Organization are reportedly participating in a five-day meeting that will conclude on December 17.   

According to Iranian media outlets, the 26th Meeting of the ECO Regional Planning Council is holding the five-day annual conference in Tehran from December 13 to December 17.

The ECO website notes the Regional Planning Council plays an important role in promoting aims and objectives of ECO.  The Council is assisted with eight review committees in its task. The plans and programs endorsed by the RPC are submitted to the Council of Ministers (COM) for approval.

The Economic Cooperation Organization or ECO is a Eurasian political and economic intergovernmental organization which was founded in 1985 in Tehran by the leaders of Iran, Pakistan and Turkey.  It provides a platform to discuss ways to improve development and promote trade and investment opportunities.  The ECO is an ad hoc organization under the United Nations Charter.  The objective is to establish a single market for goods and services, much like the European Union.  ECO”s secretariat and cultural department are located in Tehran, its economic bureau is in Turkey and its scientific bureau is situated in Pakistan.

ECO now has 10 members including Iran, Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkey, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.
