DUSHANBE, April 25, 2016, Asia-Plus — Tajikistan has reportedly reduced its wheat flour imports.

According to the Agency for Statistics under the President of Tajikistan, Tajikistan has imported 24,800 tons of wheat flour over the first three months of this year, which was 25.7 percent fewer than in the same period last year (In January-March 2015, Tajikistan imported 33,400 tons of wheat flour).

In 2015, Tajikistan reportedly imported more than 140,000 tons of wheat flour, which was nearly 26 percent fewer than in 2014 (In 2014, Tajikistan imported 189,000 tons of wheat flour).

Meanwhile, Tajikistan’s wheat imports over the same three-month period have risen 18.1 percent compared to January-March 2015.

Over the first three months of this year, Tajikistan has imported 204,800 tons of wheat (In January-March 2015, Tajikistan imported 173,400 tons of wheat).

Last year, Tajikistan imported nearly 859,000 tons of wheat, which was 84,000 tons more than in 2014 (in 2014, Tajikistan imported nearly 775,000 tons of wheat).

Kazakhstan provides the bulk of Tajikistan’s grain and flour imports.  Last year, Kazakhstan reportedly accounted for 98.7 percent of Tajikistan’s wheat flour imports and 99.8 percent of Tajikistan’s wheat imports.

Grain and flour remain the most important imported food products for Tajikistan.  Specialists from the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade (MEDT) attribute decrease in Tajikistan’s flour imports to increase in the number of flour mills in the country.
