DUSHANBE, June 13, 2016, Asia-Plus — Japan’s Government completed three projects supported under the framework of Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) in Khatlon province last week.
According to Japan’s Embassy in Dushanbe, Mr. Takashi Okimoto, Head of Public Relations of Japan’s Embassy in Dushanbe, on June 9 visited Shamsiddin Shohin (previously Shouroobod) District of Khatlon Province in order to conduct handover ceremonies for two GGP projects.
First, a handover ceremony for “The Project for Construction of Secondary School No.4 in Doghiston Village, Doghiston Jamoat, Shouroobod District” took place in Doghiston Village (The project title referring to the district’s name at the time of signing of the grant contract).
The total grant amount of USD 111,889 was provided to the local government of Shamsiddin Shohin District from the Government of Japan for construction of a new school building with six classrooms and one teachers’ room as well as for procurement of new school equipment, including sets of chairs and tables, blackboards, etc.
On the same day, Mr. Okimoto joined the handover ceremony for “The Project for Disaster Risk Reduction in Dashtijum Village, Shouroobod District” (The project title referring to the district’s name at the time of signing of the grant contract). The Local Government of Shamsiddin Shohin District received USD 119,483 in order to construct a water channel that would protect Dashtijum Village from the impact of flooding. In addition, a new pedestrian bridge was also built through the project to secure safe crossing of the water channel even when the water volume is high.
On June 10, Mr. Takashi Kamada, Charge d’Affaires, Japan’s Embassy in Dushanbe, visited Qubodiyon District of Khatlon Province to take part in the handover ceremony for “The Project for Construction of Medical Point in Navbahor Village, Bist-solagii Istiqloliyat Jamoat, Qubodiyon District.” In order to construct a new medical point in Navbahor Village, which previously did not have any medical facilities, the grant of USD 87,690 was provided to the Local Government of Qubodiyon District. With the project completion, now the population of Navbahor Village has access to quality and quicker medical services.
During the ceremony, Mr. Kamada stated that Japan’s GGP projects play a considerable role in making positive impacts for the people of Tajikistan on the grassroots level and contribute to further expansion of the bilateral relationship between Tajikistan and Japan.
The local authorities and residents of Qubodiyon and Shamsiddin Shohin districts expressed their sincere gratitude for the continuous assistance of the Japanese Government in improving the conditions of education, medical care and disaster risk vulnerability through these construction projects that took place in the remote areas of the country.

GGP is provided to local governments, educational/ medical institutions and International NGOs in developing countries. GGP supports projects in the human security sectors at the grassroots level that aim to improve livelihood of the local population. As of today, GGP has supported 352 projects in Tajikistan, for which more than US$ 28.5 million has been provided since 1996.
