Tajik President Emomali Rahmon on September 18 met with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in New York on the sidelines of the 72nd Regular Session of the UN General Assembly.

According to the Tajik president’s official website, Rahmon noted that Tajikistan is ready to expand cooperation with the United Nations in all fields, including rational use of water resources.

Both sides reportedly expressed confidence that the United Nations would participate in implementation of Tajikistan’s national development strategy for the period to 2030.      

They also discussed issues related to international cooperation in addressing climate change, enhancing Tajikistan’s energy sector, and implementing the CASA 1000 Project.  

Besides, Tajik leader and UN secretary-general discussed problems of establishing peace and stability in Afghanistan and combating terrorism, extremism and drug trafficking.  

The 72nd Regular Session of the UN General Assembly convened at UN Headquarters on September 12 and the General Debate is opening today with a focus on the theme, “Focusing on People: Striving for Peace and a Decent Life for All on a Sustainable Planet.”  

The event will also mark the debut of the new UN chief, Antonio Guterres, the former Portuguese prime minister who will preside over the Assembly's general debate, which runs through September 25.

Tajik President Emomali Rahmon will deliver a statement at the UN General Assembly.

While in New York, Tajik leader is also expected to hold a number of bilateral meetings.
