Director of Qurghon Teppa International Airport, Farhod Abdurashidzoda, has denied reports that the Qurghon Teppa airport allegedly does not work anymore as absolutely “baseless.”

Last week, some media outlets released a report about the closure of the Qurghon Teppa airport.

“The airport works in a routine regime and is ready to receive aircraft,” said Abdurashidzoda.  “Just flights from Moscow to Qurghon Teppa have been suspended since July.  Since there are no flights, we have decided to put some our workers on an unpaid leave.”

Before July, Russian air carrier VIM Avia operated five flights per week from Moscow to Qurghon Teppa.

“The flights are expected to be resumed in early October” the airport director said.

Qurghon Teppa International Airport is an airport in Qurghon Teppa, the capital of the Khatlon province.

VIM Avia, commonly known as VIM Airlines, is an airline based in Moscow, Russia, operating international scheduled and charter, passenger and cargo flights out of Moscow Domodedovo Airport, as well as offering aircraft wet lease.

VIM Airlines was established by Viktor Ivanovich Merkulov (hence the name of the company) and started operations in 2000, with a soviet-built aircraft Ilyushin Il-62M.  At the end of 2004, the company acquired Chitaavia and Aerobratsk, followed by Russian Sky Airlines in 2005.

As of June 2016, the VIM Airlines fleet consists of the following aircraft: 4 Airbus 319-100s; 2 Airbus 3303-200s; 2 Boeing 737-500s; 6 Boeing 757-200s; 2 Boeing 767-300ERs; 10 Boeing 777-200ERs; and 2 Boeing 777-300ERs.
