Three terrorist acts reportedly prevented in northern Tajikistan last year

Three terrorist acts were prevented in the Sughd province last year, the chief of the Interior Ministry’s office for Sughd, Qudratullo Nazarzoda, told reporters in Khujand, the capital of the Sughd province, on February 2.

According to him, one of those terrorist acts was prevented in the Jabbor-Rasoulov district.

“Criminals, guided from abroad, were attempting to commit terrorist act in the building of the district prosecutor’s office.  One of members of this group was detained in the province, while four others were detained in a foreign country,” Nazarzoda said.

The next case was reported in the Istaravshan district.  “Our officers detained the criminals and weapons were confiscated from them.  In this case, the criminals were also attempting to commit terrorist act against the law enforcement authorities,” the Sughd police directorate chief said.

One more terrorist act was planned to be committed in the city of Isfara, according to Nazarzoda.

“Two residents of Isfara were detained.  They were going to kill police officers,” he noted.

Nazarzoda further added that nine residents of the province, who had been wanted by police for committing terrorism- and extremism-related crimes, last year returned home and voluntarily surrendered to police departments in their cities and districts.

“Besides, local law enforcement authorities have decided not to institute criminal proceedings against nine residents of the province, who participated in armed conflicts in foreign countries but voluntarily returned home,” the Sughd chief police officer noted.

“1,041 residents of the Sughd province have been wanted by police; 630 of them have been wanted for committing terrorism- and extremism-relate crimes,” Nazarzoda said.
