Former UTO warlord appointed to head police department in Isfara

Major-General Muhammadshoh Iskandarov, who had previously served as chief of the Interior Ministry’s office in Tursunzoda City, has been appointed to head the Interior Ministry’s office in the northern city of Isfara.

Lieutenant-Colonel Alikhon Rustam was appointed to head the Interior Ministry’s office in Tursunzoda City, according to the Interior Ministry’s website.  

Muhammadshoh Iskandarov, also known as Shoh Iskandarov, is a former field commander of the United Tajik Opposition (UTO).  Together with some other former UTO field commanders he was integrated into the country’s power-wielding ministries under the 30-percent UTO representation in the government.

In November 1998, Iskandarov’s armed group actively participated in thwarting an arrack by mutinous Colonel Mahmoud Khudoiberdiyev in the northern Sughd province.

In autumn 2010, Iskandarov actively participated in an operation carried by the government forces against the former UTO commander Mullo Abdullo in the Rasht Valley (eastern Tajikistan).

In April 2011, Shoh Iskandarov was appointed as deputy head of the Interior Ministry directorate in the Rasht Valley.

In 2013, he was appointed to head the Interior Ministry’s office in the city of Tursunzoda (western Tajikistan).

Muhammadshoh Iskandarov was born in the “Sovkhoz Turkmenistan” settlement in the Qurghon Teppa (currently Khatlon) province.  He graduated from the Law Faculty at Tajik National University and the Border Academy of the Federal Security Service (FSB) of Russia.    

Recall, President Emomali Rahmon has introduced a number of staff changes shaking up police officials.
