Tajikistan’s current investment portfolio includes 69 projects totaling 30.5 billion somoni (equivalent to 3.23 billion U.S. dollars), according to the State Committee on Investments and State-owned Property Management (GosKomInvest).

Since the investment projects were launched, 15.5 billion somoni (equivalent to 1.64 billion U.S. dollars) of the investment funds have been utilized by January 1, 2019, an official source at GosKomInvest said.

3.9 billion somoni (equivalent to 416.6 million U.S. dollars) were reportedly utilized last year, which was 96 percent  of the planned volume.

The main investing financial institutions are the Asian-Development Bank (ADB) – 743 million USD, the World Bank – 594 million USD, the Export–Import Bank of China (China Exim Bank) – 467 million USD, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) – 403 million USD, the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) – 148.6 million USD, etc.  

The funds provided by these international financial institutions have been spent for implementation of nine education and social development projects, twenty-three agriculture and irrigation development projects, elven energy projects, sixteen transport and infrastructure development projects and some other projects.

Meanwhile, as of October 1, 2018, Tajikistan’s external debt amounted to 2.873.8 billion U.S. dollars.

China remains Tajikistan’s largest creditor.  Tajikistan now reportedly owes more than 1.2 billion to China Eximbank.

Tajikistan now also owes 318 million U.S. dollars to the World Bank, 278 million U.S. dollars to the Asian Development Bank and 112 million U.S. dollars to the Islamic Development Bank.        

Despite unsettled debts, Tajikistan intends to borrow another some 777 million U.S. dollars within the coming three years under the national foreign-borrowing program: 261.8 million USD in 2019; 255.9 million USD in 2020; and 256.6 million USD in 2021.

Tajikistan’s national foreign-borrowing program today reportedly includes 75 ongoing loan projects and 67 loan agreements being at a design stage. 

The loans will be attracted for completion of projects being implemented in the country.
