KHOROG, August 27, Asia-Plus — New members of the Majlisi Milli (Tajikistan’s upper chamber of parliament) representing the Gorno Badakhshan Autonomous Region (Gorno Badakhshan or GBAO) have been elected.
A joint meeting of local legislatures to elect new members of the Majlisi Milli was held in Khorog on August 26.
Niyozmamad Mamadayozov, coordinator of activities of permanent commissions of the GBOA regional legislature (Majlis), told Asia-Plus the GBAO governor Qodir Qosim and the Murgab district head Mayrambek Toychiyev ad been elected as members of the Tajik upper house, replacing the former GBAO governor Alimamad Niyozmamadov and the former Murgab district head Idris Shojonov respectively.
Under the country’s Constitution, three-fourths of the total number of deputies of the Majlisi Milli shall be elected at joint meetings of people’s deputies of the Gorno Badakhshan Autonomous Region and its towns and districts, regions and their towns and districts, Dushanbe city and its districts, towns and districts subordinate to the center, on the basis of indirect elections by means of secret ballot.
The Gorno Badakhshan Autonomous Region, regions, Dushanbe City, towns and districts subordinate to the center have an equal number of representatives in the Majlisi Milli.
One-fourths of the members of the Majlisi Milli shall be appointed by the president of the country.
