Russian military base in Tajikistan expected to receive new infantry combat vehicles soon

The Russian military base deployed in Tajikistan is expected to receive new infantry combat vehicles until he end of this year.

According to the press center of Russia’s Central Military District, five new BMP-2Ms will arrive in Tajikistan for the Russian military base until the end of this year.

The BMP-2M infantry combat vehicle (ICV) is an upgraded version of the BMP-2 ICV.  Designed and developed by Kurganmashzavod JSC, the ICV offers improved mobility and fire power for armed forces. The weapon system for the upgraded vehicle is provided by KBP Instrument Design Bureau.

The amphibious vehicle was displayed at an international forum known as Engineering Technologies 2010 held in June 2010 and KADEX-2012, Kazakhstan.  The manufacturer also demonstrated the vehicle at Comprehensive Security Exhibition 2015 in Tampere.

The Russian Defense Ministry placed a ten-year contract with KBP for the supply of 540 modernized BMP-2M and BMD-2 airborne vehicles in 2017.

The Russian military base deployed in Tajikistan is Russia's largest non-naval military facility outside the country.  It was officially opened in Tajikistan in 2004 under a previous agreement, which was signed in 1993, and hosts Russia’s largest military contingent deployed abroad.

A total of some 7,000 Russian troops are now stationed at two military facilities collectively known as the 201st military base – in Dushanbe and Bokhtar (formerly Qurghon Teppa), some 100 kilometers from Dushanbe.
