One more border crossing point (BCP) is expected to open along Tajikistan’s common border with Uzbekistan in the near future, bringing a total number of BCPs along the Tajik-Uzbek border to 18.
The new BCP that will open at the request of the Tajik side will connect the Tajik northern city of Istaravshan and Uzbekistan’s Yangiabad district, a source within the Tajik government told Asia-Plus in an interview.
According to him, preparations for opening of the new border crossing point are advancing well.
“The new border crossing point will function only in the daytime,” the source added.
Currently, seventeen BCPs operate along the Tajik-Uzbek border; nine of them have an international status. Thirteen BCPs are located in the northern Sughd province and the remaining four BCPs are located in the southern Khatlon province and in the Tursunzoda district (central Tajikistan).
Under the government-to-government agreement between Tajikistan and Uzbekistan signed in 2020, 16 BCPs were established along the mutual border.
Uzbekistan had sealed the majority of border crossing points along its common border with Tajikistan unilaterally in mid-2000s and only two BCPs had operated until the beginning of the last year — “Dousti” in the Tursunzoda district and “Fotehobod” in the Mastchoh district (Sughd province).
All the 16 BCPs reopened in early March last year, and the new 17th BCP connecting Tajikistan’s Hisor district and Uzbekistan’s Uzun – “Babatag” – opened in March this year.
