DUSHANBE, June 12, Asia-Plus — Tajikistan’s Barqi Tojik (Tajik electric system) power holding and the Islamic Development Bank (IDB) are expected to announce contractor for construction of eight small power plants in rural areas of Tajikistan at the end of June, Asia-Plus has learned from the energy projects management unit.  

The source at the energy projects management unit said that the results of tender announced by Barqi Tojik and IDB for construction of the mentioned small power plants will be summed up at the end of June and a contract will be signed with contractor.  

A $9.2 million loan provided by the IDB will go to constructing five small power stations in rural of Tajikistan: a 3,700 kW Marzich station (Ayni district in Sughd); a 1000 kW Sangikor station in the Rasht district (northeast of Tajikistan); a 600 kW Fathobod station in Tojikobod (northeast of Tajikistan); a 1000 kW Pitavkul station in Jirgatol (northeast of Tajikistan) and a 100 kW Shahboloi station in Nourobod (eastern Tajikistan).   

$2.4 million provided by Barqi Tojik will be spent for constructing three another small power plants: a 360 kW Khorma station in Baljuvon (Khatlon); a 500 kW Toj station in Shahrinav (central Tajikistan) and a 700 kW Shirkent station in Tursunzoda (central Tajikistan).  

            According to Rashid Gulov, the deputy engineer-in-chief with Barqi Tojik, 26 small power plants are supposed to be put into operation in Tajikistan in 2007-2012.  Construction of these 26 stations will be funded by the IDB, UNDP, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Government of Japan in cooperation with Bargi Tojik, Gulov said.  

As it had been reported earlier, Tajik government last September endorsed a long-term program of construction of small hydropower electric plants between 2007 and 2020.  Under the program, 71 small power plants are scheduled to be built by 2020. The total capacity of the plants will be 480.571 million kWh of electricity a year.
