The majority of newspapers of Tajikistan depend on sponsors, says local expert

DUSHANBE, May 3, Asia-Plus – There is no absolutely free press throughout the world, Parviz Mullojonov, the executive director of the Public Committee to Support Democratic Processes in Tajikistan, said.

“Some countries are on halfway to achieve this goal, while others have not made even the first move,” said Mullojonov. “The CIS states have followed or are following this path in different ways; however, among the Central Asian countries, Tajikistan has had positive changes for better in this direction, following Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan.”

According to him, one may look through local press to make certain of the fact that Tajik journalists have begun to more frequently and deeper touch upon acute problems facing society in their materials.  “However, it is still impossible to speak about full independence of the press in Tajikistan,” said the expert, “The majority of newspapers do not have their own sources of financing that put them at dependence on sponsors and donors, whose interests journalists have to represent.”
