DUSHANBE, December 31, Asia-Plus — Saddam Hussein”s execution may aggravate the military-political situation in Iraq, Foreign Ministry spokesman remarked at a news conference in Dushanbe on December 29.

Speaking to local and foreign journalists, Igor Sattorov, a spokesman for the Tajik MFA, pointed out Tajikistan’s position based on the country’s law on suspension of use death penalty and expressed concern over the Iraqi Supreme Court’s verdict on the execution of Saddam Hussein.

According to Sattorov, the execution of Saddam Hussein may worsen the situation in Iraq and heighten ethnic tensions in the country, as well as affect stability in the neighboring countries.  

World media reported that Former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein was executed by hanging early Saturday, December 30, for crimes against humanity at a secure facility in northern Baghdad suburb.

Two co-defendants, Saddam Hussein”s half-brother and a former chief judge, are to be executed at a later date.  All three were sentenced to death by an Iraqi court on 5 November after a year-long trial over the 1982 killings of 148 Shias in the town of Dujail.
