DUSHANBE, December 13, Asia-Plus — The next meeting of Tajik-Kyrgyz joint commission for delimitation and demarcation of common border will open in Dushanbe on December 14, according to Tajik border service.
A source at the Tajik border service said that government delegations from Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan will meet in Dushanbe to discuss delimitation of a 911-kilometer common border between the two countries.
The Tajik-Kyrgyz commission began the task of establishing the 911-kilometer border between the two countries at the meeting that was held in Dushanbe on February 27-March 2 this year. That meeting was described as the first tangible step toward resolving border problems between Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan.
Tajik-Kyrgyz talks on border delimitation opened in 1997 but were suspended due to political instability in Tajikistan. The talks focusing on simplified borer-crossing procedures for the officials engaged in the delimitation and demarcation process and on the exchange of maps and aerial surveys of the border region resumed in late December 2002.
