DUSHANBE, March 26, 2009, Asia-Plus  — 25 students from faculties of Law, Journalism and International Relations are taking part in the National International Humanitarian Law (IHL) Course for university students of Republic of Tajikistan from March 27-29 to acquire introductory knowledge of the subject, Murodjon Soliev, Secondary Education and Communication Programmes Officer of ICRC in Tajikistan, said.

This event, held at the facilities of the Russian-Tajik Slavonic University (RTSU), was organized in cooperation with RTSU, Tajik National University and the National Red Crescent Society of Tajikistan. The course will include a number of lectures delivered by IHL teachers from these universities.

“It is the first year that ICRC is organizing the National IHL Course in partnership with its selected partner universities in Tajikistan”, said Murodjon Soliev.  “The aim is to ensure sustainability of this Course by helping the above mentioned universities to take over its ownership”.

Within the span of 3 days the students will hear lectures on all the main IHL topics namely types of armed conflict, status of combatants and prisoners of war, the role of media in armed conflicts, means and methods of war, protection of civilians, as well as topics directly related to IHL in Tajikistan such as the role of UN Mission of Observers during the civil war and the implementation of IHL in the country. The course also provides for case studies and open discussions between participants.

The ICRC has been working in Central Asia as an impartial, neutral and independent organization since 1992. It strives to promote knowledge of international humanitarian law and respect for human dignity.
