Tajikistan has introduced drones in its fight against locusts, marking a significant step forward in pest control alongside traditional insecticide spraying methods.

Ina report released at a news conference in Dushanbe, Minister of Agriculture Qurbon Hakimzoda stated on January 30 that this new technology allows for faster coverage of large areas, reduces fuel and chemical costs, and enhances efficiency.

Key Figures in 2024 Locust Control

  • 137,000 hectares of farmland treated (5,500 hectares more than in 2023).
  • Khatlon province had the largest share, with 88,000 hectares treated.
  • 33,000 liters of insecticides used, mostly in high-risk regions.
  • Specialized equipment involved: 63 tractors; 710 handheld and motorized sprayers; 22 water reservoirs; and various vehicles and machinery

Advantages of drones over traditional methods

  • Faster coverage – drones efficiently operate in remote and difficult terrains.
  • Lower environmental impact – precise spraying reduces pesticide use.
  • Cost savings – reduced fuel and chemical expenses.

As part of the "Livestock and Pasture Development" project, the State Agricultural Entrepreneurship Development Institution received two drones, which are already in use.

The Ministry of Agriculture is considering expanding the drone fleet to further improve pest control in the coming seasons.
