Construction of two new flyovers will begin in Dushanbe this year, city officials announced at a news conference in Dushanbe yesterday.
According to them, one of them will be built near the State Circus Square and another one at the turn to the Meat Processing Plant
Bakhtiyor Sharifi, the First Deputy Mayor of Dushanbe, emphasized that several key issues, particularly traffic congestion, must be addressed before work begins. He noted that alternative detour routes must be arranged to prevent severe traffic jams.
"Without constructing new detour roads, we won’t be able to avoid major traffic disruptions," Sharifi stated.
Meanwhile, Muhammadyusuf Rahimzoda, head of the Dushanbe Municipal Road Construction Department, provided updates on the projects.
This two-route flyover will extend from Sherozi Avenue to A. Qahhorov Street.
The project is funded by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).
According to him, a feasibility study (TEO) has already been completed, and construction is set to begin in three or four months.
A Chinese company has reportedly been contracted to develop a feasibility study for this section.
Five other major transport infrastructure projects will be developed alongside the overpasses. They include a bridge over the Dushanbinka River, at the intersection of Sohili and Yuzhnaya Streets; a two-route flyover at Abdurahmon Jomi and A. Qahhorov Streets; a flyover at Abai and A. Qahhorov Streets; a two-level bridge at Sherozi and Hafiz Sherozi Streets; and a multi-level pedestrian bridge at Habibullo Nazarov and Sheralizoda Streets.
The EBRD funding agreement for the Sherozi Avenue overfly was originally signed on April 29, 2024, with a total loan amount of €28.45 million.
These infrastructure improvements aim to enhance road safety for both drivers and pedestrians, significantly reduce traffic congestion in Dushanbe and modernize the city’s transport network to support future urban growth.
The Dushanbe Administration notes that these projects are a part of the of the municipal redevelopment plan for Dushanbe.
Recall, two three-route flyovers now operate in the Tajik capital. One of them was inaugurated in September 2018 and the second one was inaugurated in October 2020.
Meanwhile, a reliable source within the Dushanbe Administration told Asia-Plus in late October 2019 that as a part of the municipal redevelopment plan for Dushanbe, some 20 flyovers will be constructed in Dushanbe by 2030.
“The projects for construction of three- and two-route flyovers in the Circus area, at the turn to the meat-packing plant, at the turn to airport, in the creamery area, in the U.S. Embassy area, at the 102nd roundabout, in the cement plant area, in the Korvon bazaar area and near the Dushanbe Western Gate are currently under consideration,” the source said.
According to him, the flyovers will be built due to funds provided by the Dushanbe Administration and investments.
