World Bank delegation visits Roghun hydropower plant

An official delegation of the World Bank, led by Ms. Anna Bjerde, the World Bank’s Managing Director of Operations, and Ms. Antonella Bassani, Vice President of the Europe and Central Asia Region at the World Bank, visited the Roghun hydropower plant on April 13 to assess the progress of its construction, OJSC NBO Roghun wrote on its Facebook page.

The delegation was accompanied by Tajik Prime Minister Qohir Rasoulzoda.  The guests toured key facilities of the plant, including underground sections, transport tunnels, the turbine system, and already installed equipment.

According to OJSC NBO Roghun, representatives of the World Bank positively assessed the pace of construction and the quality of the work being carried out.

Ms. Anna Bjerde reportedly signed the guestbook of Rogun, noting that the project has become a symbol of “national will, resilience in development processes, and an example of successful international partnership.”

She expressed the World Bank's commitment to continue supporting the completion of the hydroelectric station's construction, according to OJSC NBO Roghun.

The World Bank is one of Tajikistan's key development partners and has been supporting the construction of the Rogun HPP since its active phase.  In 2023, the Bank allocated US$15 million in non-repayable aid to enhance the efficiency of the project.  In 2024, US$350 million was approved as part of the first phase of the aid program, with the total volume of the program reaching US$650 million.

According to the Ministry of Energy and Water Resources of Tajikistan (MoEWR), completing the construction of the plant by 2033 will require US$6.2 billion, with around US$1 billion to be attracted annually.  The full launch of all units, including the final sixth unit, is reportedly scheduled for 2029.
