The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is committing fresh funds to a major ongoing water and wastewater project in the city of Kulob in Tajikistan, says press release issued by the EBRD Resident Office in Dushanbe.

The EBRD’s sovereign loan of up to €1.5 million will provide further funding for upgrades to key water utilities in the country’s fourth largest city, supplementing €15 million of loans and grants that were provided by the EBRD and the European Union in 2021 and 2022.

The funds will be used to upgrade Kulob’s water supply and sewage network, including water mains, intakes and pumping stations.  They will also help to modernize the city’s wastewater treatment plant and network, as well as facilitating the procurement and installation of water meters.

The project will provide uninterrupted access to clean water supply for more than 100,000 people and will allow saving millions of m3 annually.

To date, the EBRD has invested more than €1 billion in Tajikistan through 183 projects.
