DUSHANBE, September 14, 2010, Asia-Plus  — Italy is interested in expansion of cooperation with Tajikistan in the fields of energy and industry.

According to the source at the Ministry of Energy ad Industries (MoEI), Italian Vice-Minister of Economic Development Adolfo Urso remarked this at a meeting with senior representatives from the Tajik MoEI here yesterday.

The sides discussed issues related to cooperation and investment in the fields such as hydropower engineering and oil and gas exploration, development of alternative energy resources as well as light, food and machine-building industries in Tajikistan, the source said.

Mr. Urso, in particular, noted that his country was interested in participation in implementation of projects in Tajikistan.  “After signing of a cooperation agreement the countries will have an opportunity to develop these relations,” Italian official noted.

According to the data from the Agency for Statistics under the President of Tajikistan, a two-way trade between Tajikistan and Italy in January-July 2010 has valued at more than US$12 million.  This consisted of Tajikistan’s exports to Italy estimated at US$8.4 million and Tajikistan’s imports from Italy worth US$3.5 million.
