KULOB, July 27, 2010, Asia-Plus — According a special commission working in the Kulob zone of Khatlon province, there are 208 historical and cultural relics as well as memorials and statues in the area.
Khairullo Tohirov, the deputy head of the Kulob culture department, told Asia-Plus that the number of memorials and statues has increased by 21 in the Kulob zone over the past decade due to construction of new statues and memorials in the city of Kulob and Khovaling and Farkhor districts.
According to him, local authorities have removed four statues of Lenin in the area and they have been replaced by monuments to Roudaki and Ismoili Somoni.
“The most ancient archeological site in the Kulob zone is the Neanderthals site near the village of Kuldara in Khovaling district,” Tohirov said.
