DUSHANBE, July 1, 2010, Asia-Plus — A ceremony of an official opening of a building of the Branch of MV. Lomonosov Moscow State University (MSU) has been held in Dushanbe today.
According to presidential press service, President Emomali Rahmon, high-ranking Tajik state official and the rector of MSU Viktor Sadovnichiy have taken part at the branch-opening ceremony.
Repairs to the building of the former Tajik Institute of Transport were finished and MSU’s Branch moved to the renovated building. Before that, lessons were conducted in the building of the Pubic Servants Advanced Training Institute at the President of Tajikistan and the building of Tajik Technical University. The branch is financed by Tajikistan’s national budget.
We will recall that entrance examinations to MSU’s Branch were held in July 2009 and they accepted applications from some 100 school leavers. In 2009, the branch accepted only 45 students; 20 of them are studying applied mathematics and 25 others are studying international relations.
Lessons began at the Branch on September 14, 2009. According to Noilsho Nouraliyev, a spokesman for the Ministry of Education of Tajikistan, major subjects are taught by teachers from Moscow State University while teachers from local universities are invited to teach some humanities subjects.
This year, the branch plans to accept 75 students. In addition to the applied mathematics and international relations disciplines MSU’s branch in Dushanbe will open the hydrogeology and geologic engineering discipline, the spokesman said.
Lomonosov Moscow State University is the largest university in Russia. Founded in 1755, it also claims to be the oldest university in Russia and the tallest educational building in the world. As of 2004, the university has some 4,000 staff teaching 31,000 students and 7,000 postgraduates.
Branches of Moscow State University now function in Sevastopol (Ukraine), in number of Russian cities, Astana (Kazakhstan), Baku (Azerbaijan) and Tashkent (Uzbekistan).
