DUSHANBE, February 18, 2010, Asia-Plus  — More than 990 crimes were reported in Tajikistan in January 2010, which is 25.6 percent more than in the same period last year, according to the Stat Committee for Statistics.

There were 208 serious crimes reported, which is 28.4 percent more than in January 2009.  Serious crimes accounted for 21 percent of the overall number of crimes registered in the country last month.

The number of deliberate murders increased from 3 cases in January 2009 to 13 cases in January this year, the number of robberies increased from 8 to 24 cases, the number of thefts increased from 300 to 409 and the number of bribery cases increased from 1 to 3.

Compared to January 2009 there was a twofold increase in the number of reported crimes involving illegally acquisition, storage, transportation and use of drugs.

The number of reported cases involving illegally bearing, possessing and acquiring weapons increased four times.

In the meantime, compared to January 2009 there was a 25 percent reduction of the number of reported rapes and rape attempts.  The number of fraud cases decreased by 41.1 percent and the number of assaults related to robbery decreased by 50 percent.

An average crime detection rate for January 2010 was 59 percent, which is 13.2 percent higher than in January 2009.
