DUSHANBE, February 15, 2010, Asia-Plus – Afghanistan jointly with Tajikistan will undertake efforts to construct the Dashtijum HPP on the Panj River, Afghan Minister of Energy and Water Resources Muhammad Ismail Khan told reporters in Dushanbe on February 15, answering questions about his government’s plan on development of water resources of the border Panj River.

According to him, the Afghan government is currently studying the project for construction of the 4,000 MW Dashtijum HPP and work on seeking donors for this project is under way.

“This power plant will allow covering significant deficit of electricity in the region, especially in Afghanistan, Pakistan and India,” said the Afghan energy minister, “Besides, this facility will give an impulse to economic development of the region and promote establishment of peace and accord in Afghanistan.”

Ismail Khan added that the Afghan government was currently also studying a number of projects providing for use of waters of the Panj River for irrigation farmlands in northern Afghanistan.
