KHUJAND, February 10, 2010, Asia-Plus  — Registration for the parliamentary elections ended in the Sughd province yesterday and 37 candidates were officially allowed to run for election to the Majlisi Namoyandagon (Tajikistan’s lower chamber of parliament) in 13 single-mandate constituencies set up in the province, according to the Sughd administration press service.

22 candidates were nominated by political parties and 15 others are self-propelled candidates, the source said.

The People’s Democratic Party has nominated 13 candidates, the Islamic Revival (IRPT) and Communist (CPT) parties – 3 candidates each, the Agrarian Party (APT) – 2, and the Party of Economic Reforms – one.

In the meantime, the source at the commission for local elections said that 159 candidates would compete for 70 seats in the Sughd regional legislature.
