DUSHANBE, September 18, 2009, Asia-Plus — President Emomali Rahmon is receiving visiting head of the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) mission to Tajikistan Axel Schimmelpfennig today.
According to the IMF Dushanbe Office, Mr. Schimmelpfennig arrived in Tajikistan on September 14 and the purpose of the visit is for mission to assess implementation of the Poverty Reduction and growth Facility (PRGF) and discuss agreements regarding macroeconomic structure and policy within the framework of PRGF for 2010. The IMF mission will stay in Tajikistan till September 25.
We will recall that the IMF Executive Board on April 21, 2009 approved a three-year US$116 million arrangement under the PRGF) for Tajikistan to support the authorities” economic program.
The authorities’ policies under the PRGF-supported economic program aim to facilitate external adjustment in 2009 through exchange rate flexibility while allowing for rising social spending needs; lay the foundation for medium-term growth and ensuring that there is no build-up of external debt; and achieve structural reforms in the areas of central bank governance, state-owned enterprises, and the agriculture sector.
Tajikistan, which became a member of the IMF on April 27, 1993, has a quota of about US$129 million.
