Tajikistan, Switzerland initial draft convention for avoidance of double taxation

DUSHANBE, June 15, 2009, Asia-Plus  — Tajikistan and Switzerland have initialed the draft convention for avoidance of double taxation with respect to taxes on incomes and capital gains.

The document was inked by Tajik Deputy Finance Minister, Jamshed Norinov, and Swiss Ambassador Stephan Nellen, accredited to Tajikistan with residence in Astana/Kazakhstan, in Dushanbe on June 12.

According to press service of the Ministry of Finance (MoF), in the course of the talks, the two exchanged vies on the situation that had emerged in the country following the global financial crisis and ways to solve the existing problems.

Norinov expressed gratitude to Ambassador Nellen and noted that initialing and signing of the convention would serve as an additional impulse for further expansion of mutually beneficial economic and trade cooperation between Tajikistan and Switzerland.

We will recall that Foreign Minister Hamrokhon Zarifi on June 11 met here with the Swiss Delegation consisting of Ambassador Christian Meuwly, Head of the Division for Europe, Central Asia and European Regional Organizations of the of the Swiss Federal Department for Foreign Affairs (FDFA), Ambassador Stephan Nellen, and Mr. Rudolf Schoch, Country Director of the Swiss Cooperation Office in Tajikistan.  The sides discussed state and prospects of further expansion of bilateral cooperation and the partnership in the common constituency at the Bretton Woods Institutions.

Hamrokhon Zarifi and Stephan Nellen signed the Investment Protection Agreement that is dedicated to intensify mutually beneficial economic cooperation and create and maintain favorable conditions for investments by investors in both the countries.

According to Tajikistan’s State Committee for Statistics, trade between Tajikistan and Switzerland in January-April 2009 amounted to 16.823 million U.S. dollars.
