DUSHANBE, June 6, 2009, Asia-Plus — In responding to Tajikistan’s request for help the Asian Development Bank offers some 40 million U.S. dollars that will go to supporting the social sector, Narzullo Habibulloyev, the head of the main directorate for national budget within the Ministry of Finance (MoF), remarked at a scientific-practical conference entitled “Financial-Economic Mechanisms of Regulation of Crises” in Dushanbe on June 5.
According to him, Tajikistan is currently also conducting negotiations with the European Union on providing assistance to the country’s social sector and allocating 12 million U.S. dollars for that.
Habibulloyev noted that donors would consider only those assistance projects that concerned on the social sector. “They informed us that they will not provide funds for construction or similar projects and are ready to finance only the social sector of Tajikistan,” the MoF official said.
We will recall that in a report released at a meeting with representatives of donor organizations in Dushanbe, Finance Minister Safarali Najmiddinov noted on May 13 that additional some 200 million U.S. dollars are needed to finance the plan of actions to mitigate effects of the global financial crisis.
